The design conference Ciclo de Conversas was being held once more, with an open challenge to create their branding and collateral. My submission included a solution that explained it’s concept through sound and also visually.

Challenge

Designing logos for me has always been a journey to visually represent patterns hidden in the brand’s values. I single out elements like colours, numbers, grids that represent them objectively and subjectively. This exploration led me to frequencies, the challenge was visualising sound in a logo.

Solution

Ciclo de Conversas means "cycle of talks" in Portuguese. Through conceptual exploration I created a system and alphabet capable of creating the conference’s logo and generate different logos for each speaker by recording sound waves from my voice. The logo’s construction tell the brand's story. All collateral was made under the same idea.

The materials created were exposed in the conference for anyone to explore how the branding was made, but also how to get their own logo. The brand activation manual guided viewers through the system with a visual representation.

I tried to relate talks or communication with my core keyword "frequencies". What do our local and global networks look like?

CIRCULAR GRID CONCEPT

A combination between a globe of meridians, geographic coordinates that resemble a radar.

FROM CONCEPT TO FINAL SYSTEM

I realized that instead of measuring geographic coordinates, I should be measuring sound propagation, because it relates with the core keywords "frequencies" and "communication". I revolved a recorded wave of me saying "Ciclo de Conversas" to make it look circular.

By exploring the idea of coordinates, I've distributed letters on the diameter of "Cycle of Talks" recorded previously.

Every character of the alphabet was recorded with my voice. The wave length was revolved, producing circles with different diameters.

RULES ON THE GRID

1 - Every circle is centred on the respective letter, in the alphabet grid.

2 - Only the intersection inside the alphabet grid and the sound wave are kept.

3 - If there are more than one sound wave inside the alphabet grid, only their Intersection are kept

4 - Each circle was assigned to a colour from the spectrum related to it’s frequency
